先に答えを言うと、
「脳動脈瘤は基本的に自然に治ることはありません」となります。
がっかりされたでしょうか？でも実際にそうなので仕方がありません。
薬を飲んだり、生活習慣を改善しても、脳動脈瘤がなくなると言うことはないのです。
一方で、脳動脈瘤の中に血のかたまりができることがあります。これを「血栓化」といいます。
では自然血栓化はどんな人に多いのでしょうか？
１）大型脳動脈瘤
２）入口（ネック）が狭い
３）動脈硬化や石灰化が進んだ動脈瘤
血栓化を起こすと、動脈瘤は検査で見えなくなります。そして、以前は「血栓化すれば動脈瘤は破裂しなくなる」と思われていました。
しかし実際には、血栓化した後、動脈瘤の中の血栓が溶けて、動脈瘤が破裂することもあることがわかってきました。
私自身もそういった症例を経験したことがあります。
ですから「血栓化」＝「安心」とは言えないのです。
血栓化した後も、定期的に検査を受け、状況によっては専門医との相談の上、治療を必要とすることもあることを知っておいてください。

“Can brain aneurysms go away on their own?”
This is another question patients often ask me in the clinic.
To give you the answer first:
Brain aneurysms basically do not heal by themselves.
Maybe this sounds disappointing, but it is the truth.
Even if you take medicine or improve your lifestyle, the aneurysm itself does not disappear.
However, sometimes a blood clot can form inside the aneurysm.
This is called thrombosis.
So, who is more likely to have a brain aneurysm that becomes thrombosed?
- People with large aneurysms
- Aneurysms with a narrow neck (entrance)
- Aneurysms with advanced hardening or calcification of the wall
When thrombosis happens, the aneurysm may no longer be visible on imaging tests.
In the past, doctors thought that if an aneurysm became thrombosed, it would not rupture anymore.
But now we know this is not always true.
Sometimes, the blood clot inside the aneurysm can dissolve later, and the aneurysm can rupture.
I have personally seen cases like this in my practice.
So, thrombosis does not mean you are completely safe.
Even if your aneurysm becomes thrombosed, it is important to have regular check-ups and, if needed, to discuss treatment with a specialist.
